Fatal Attraction (2022)

Dimensions: 92 cm x 100 cm
Medium: Charcoal and string on paper

Moths and many other flying insects are nocturnal and use the sources of light around us as a means of navigation. Theories speculate that as they fly in search of the moon, the lights attract them in big groups, where they are met with their obvious fate of overheating or being their predators’ next meal. Yet, why do these creatures still circle the streetlamps in our neighborhoods despite having watched many of their kind fall to their doom, with the illusion that they have reached the "moon" they so desperately seek out?

The illusion of a vessel being a beam of tranquility and success is deceiving to most, when in reality it may be a source of false hope. The light from the center outshines the danger that lies behind it, taking advantage of our vulnerability and desperation. As we imagine a better future out of its supposed benefits, it lures us in further into our demise. The artwork explores the connections between a light source and the insects attracted to it. It questions the significance of these sources to them,be it brought about by desire, greed or desperation.
