Don't Scratch (2023)

Dimensions: Variable
Medium: Styrofoam balls, mixed media

Our bodies are made up of quantities, be it freckles, moles, hairs and other minute details. The process of counting these intangible body parts involves careful scrutiny and patience, allowing us to get closer to and gain a heightened sensitivity towards the constant changes. The sudden appearance of new or unwanted anomalies on our bodies results in greater caution and observation for the sake of protecting our health and wellbeing. However, when these anomalies spiral out of control, how does one keep track of the continuous spread?

Don't Scratch seeks to visualize one's experience with chronic hives. (idiopathic urticaria) Hives are raised, itchy bumps that appear on the surface of the skin in various quantities, shapes and sizes due to allergic reactions, stress or anxiety. The series of visuals may arouse disgust and discomfort due to the gruesome nature of the itch-inducing welts, presenting the viewer with a palpable perspective on facing the incurable skin condition which spreads beyond the control of medicine and ointments, causing mental and physical distress over the futile desire to control the burning impulse to scratch during severe outbreaks. The work encourages us to directly confront the turbulent nature of our skin through its abnormalities and imperfections. Audiences are encouraged to freely interact with the work by looking, touching and poking, immersing themselves in a momentary state of vulnerability.
